the Black Sand collection
Sterling Silver & Outer Banks Black Sand
the black sand used in this collection is collected by hand from the dunes after storms have passed through. Heavy minerals like magnetite, gold, and purple garnet are more likely to be left behind while lighter quartz, feldspar, mica, and tiny shell bits that are known as sand are carried back seaward as the dynamic storm waves wash up along the beach.
After a storm passes offshore, it leaves dark mineral sand — magnetite, garnet, fine gold — along the Outer Banks dunes, once the lighter quartz and shell bits have washed away. The Black Sand Collection gathers that sand by hand and sets it into sterling silver: rings, studs, and cuff links that hold a quiet piece of the coast.
